Socialism and Health
Ooooh … John Gormley just asked Saskatchewan chief medical health officer Moira McKinnon why they couldn’t just get vaccine into every possible outlet (pharmacies, doctors offices, private nurses). Her answer: “it’s just the biggest and the richest who will get that first”. Typical. It’s okay to use income to determine access but not okay to make access widespread if that might make access easier for someone of a certain income level.
The government knows best apparently. They will maintain tight control over vaccine access. The result of this tight control is that someone living in one of the designated neighborhoods (starting November 2 in King George, Meadow Green, Pleasant Hill, Riversdale, Westmount) might will receive the vaccine BEFORE a child with severe asthma who happens to live in Briarwood. How is that right? Living in a lower income neighborhood is NOT a risk factor for H1N1.
I don’t understand this priority system. I can’t find any other jurisdiction which is distributing vaccine based on geographic location. Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region is not doing this although they are doing something a bit odd by only vaccinating young children next week.
Related: This will look bad for the US government … Guantanamo detainees are getting the swine flu shot before many high risk populations. (via smalldeadanimals) I’ll assume that they aren’t calling it swine flu.
