Another Deserter
Kimberly Rivera is appealing the denial of refugee status and her lawyer thinks that Canada should consider what will happen to her if she returns to the United States.
Rivera’s lawyer, Alyssa Manning, said her client could be in for stiffer punishment, likely jail time, because she has been a vocal critic of the war in Iraq.
For anyone who feels sorry for the American soldiers attempting to claim refugee status in Canada, let’s review.
She will be tried for desertion and, when she is found guilty, she will serve time in jail.
That’s it. She knew that was the consequence of desertion. She chose her course of action and must accept the punishment. She’s not a refugee. She’s a runaway.
Why is this so complicated for so many people?

If she didn’t want to go to war she should not have joined the military. She volunteered, she knew the risks and what could happen and yes she should got to jail. The military doesn’t give you a gun so you can bake brownies for third world orphans, it’s job is waging war, or at least showing enough power that other countries don’t want to risk a war. Really though if Canada really wants America’s garbage they can have it.
