Please define “volunteer” for me.

Obama signed a measure to boost funding to increase volunteering.
When I volunteer, I don’t get paid. I must be doing it wrong.

In the military they have a term “Voluntold” the idea is you can either volunteer or we can order you to do it. The other way it works is you take 5 guys and tell them you need 3 volunteers and if you don’t get 3 volunteers you will just pick 3 guys to do it, so 3 people volunteers because they figure they are just going to have to do it anyway.
I think this is what Obama has in mind he just hasn’t gotten there yet.
lol … I must also be doing it wrong … but found the ‘honorarium’ aspect extremely interesting; I understand that AmeriCorps is a national org. and would have the resources to manage this type of thing.
But wouldn’t it be beneficial if there was a similar system here?! I’m thinking especially for rural and rurban areas which have a smaller population base to draw upon for volunteers, and often put in longer hours than their urban counterparts.
With reduced government programming and resources, non-profts are often left to pick up the pieces and provide key services … goodness knows they need all the help they can get.
@letterstoadyingdream … I remember being ‘voluntold’ to do things on more than one occasion
glad to know the term is still alive and well – lol
Cheers,
Jennifer
Yeah, it’s right up there with SNAFU as one of the military’s greatest contributions to the English language. Of course it’s always funny that people would use a term like snafu and not understand what it really means.
