I Propose A Boycott

December 18, 2008

I attended my daughters’Holiday Concert last night.  The theme of the production was “light” or “candles” or something.  The Principal made a short introduction that emphasized our changing world and the fact that we all come from different backgrounds and how we had to be open to new cultures, blah blah blah.  He introduced the first act and then said a very “happy holiday to all”!

I wonder.  Is is now against some school board policy to acknowledge Christmas?  Throughout the entire concert, the words “Merry Christmas” were said twice.  Once in a song and once during a speaking part of the program.  “Hannukah” was mentioned four or five times.  And guess which holiday was mentioned the most frequently?  Yup.  Kwanzaa, the made-up, Black Power, non-holiday.

There were no traditional Christmas songs.  There were no traditional Christmas decorations.  No Christmas tree or wreaths.  This has become ridiculous.

I wonder.  What would happen if parents boycotted the Holiday Concert?  If I were staying here next year, I would boycott the concert.  I would take a trip with the family.  Vist the Grandparents or go somehwhere warm.  Afterall.  It is not like the kids would miss something.  They don’t do anything during the last few weeks before the “holiday” break anyway.  Right?

Oh.  And in case you’re wondering, Michele’s kids and my kids attend different schools.  This anti-Christmas policy is a district-wide, probably a Canada-wide,  phenomenon.

I’ve been told that it’s not district wide. Other schools are actually singing Christmas carols. We did last year although we also had to listen to mini education lectures about Ramadan and Hanukkah. I don’t remember if Kwanzaa was included or not.

If it’s not district-wide, it is spreading rapidly.

    We’re boycotting next year.

Do you know who else didn’t like our depressing non-Christmas program? A Muslim mom. She preferred last year’s program as well and it included actual Christmas songs!

If it is not in all schools, I wonder how before it is, or if the trend will reverse?
