“I don’t want to debate that.”

December 15, 2008

Why not?  Because you have no clue what you’re talking about?

The quote is from a caller on today’s John Gormley Show.  She was calling to comment on the proposed auto bailout and she claimed that “only 1 in 6 or 7 cars” in Canada was made by the companies asking for the bailout.  John challenged her and her answer was “I don’t want to debate that.”  Really?  I’ve heard other callers say that.  Maybe they need an explicit warning so here it is — when you call into a talk radio show, anything you say can and will be used against you as part of the discussion and, sometimes, just because it’s entertaining.  So, if you don’t believe it and/or can’t back it up, don’t say it.

It’s not that hard to find real statistics; try Google.  From Stats Canada, I discovered that one-third of cars bought in Canada in 2006 were made overseas.  Of the cars made in North America, 53% were from the “Big Three” automakers.  Do the math:  53% of 66% equals  35% of cars purchased in Canada in 2006 were made in North America by one of the American companies.  Hmmm … those stats she didn’t want to discuss seem to be completely wrong.  Imagine that.

She went on to say that the government should not bailout the automakers which I agree with but she doesn’t need to make up statistics to support that opinion.

I laughed at that too.. Considering the F150 is the top seller (assuming “cars” meant vehicles). I drive an import, actually made in japan, and would likely never touch another domestic (I love my mazda) but you can’t say “they build stuff we don’t buy” because the domestics trump for volume on the road, all the time.

    I love my Mazda, too.

I didn’t even consider a Ford because of a bad experience with the dealership here. Mazda has great cars and a great service department.
