Laura Secord

November 24, 2008

Laura Secord sucks eggs.  Here is why.  I like chocolate ginger.  I usually buy it from Harden and Huyse.  Occasionally, if I have enough cash and if Harden and Huyse are all out of their dark chocolate ginger, I will buy a small box from Bernard Callebaut.  More expensive, fancier but really not better than the Harden and Huyse ginger.  When I didn’t have any money, I used to buy Laura Secord dark chocolate ginger.  It was passable.  Anyway, last year sometime, I was craving some chocolate ginger.  I happened to be in the mall so I bought a small bag of dark chocolate ginger from Laura Secord.  Greedy, I had to have one in the car, heading home over the Broadway bridge.  After about 4 or 5 chews of my first bite, I knew something was horribly wrong.  I gagged the stuff down but then a horrible nauseating aftertaste hit me.  I almost had to stop the car to barf.  It was vile!  I kept the little bag of evil candy and returned the rest to the Laura Secord store.  I explained that whatever they had sold me…it was NOT ginger.  I know ginger.  The salesperson explained that they had indeed changed their chocolate ginger….instead of using real ginger, they had switched to a “ginger gel”.  WTF!  What the hell is a ginger gel and shouldn’t there be a warning label?  How can people eat this crap??  Don’t they notice?

Rant part 2.  I love(d) Laura Secord mashmallow chocolate treats.  I used to look forward to the marshmallow “Santas” at Christmas, the “ghosts” and Halloween, and the “bunnies” at Easter.  The treats were always vaguely phallic and not at all shaped like ghosts or santas…but whatever.  This year I bought 4 marshmallow ghosts.  They tasted funny.  The flavour was off.  Kind of chemically.  And I was very itchy afterwards.  Sulfites.  I react to sulfites but I had never had a problem with the Laura Secord marshmallow until this year.  And what with the taste being funny, I guess it does not matter.  Yuck.

Laura Secord…going cheap.  Sad.  When I was a kid, one of the greatest treats you could have was a sucker or a little pale green mint chocolate from Laura Secord.  I don’t shop there anymore.  Lots of better choices now.  I wonder if they even manufacture in Canada?

    LOL great post.

I just took a look on a Laura Secord chocolate bar I got for Christmas, and it contains artificial flavors. I avoid artificial flavors as much as possible.

Really, why is it even necessary? Chocolate is delicious without additional unnatural chemicals.

Lauras Secord is just another sell-out corporation. Lost its heart a long time ago.

If you do your research, you will know that Laura Secord is all produced in Canada. It’s actually on their webiste…duh.

They’re a huge company, do you expect handmade chocolate? oh please.

and btw – callebaut is made with artificial flavours.

Hey! I don’t expect handmade chocolate but I do expect chocolate that does not induce nausea.

Laura Secord is owned by an American company.

The Laura Secord Company doesn’t make its own chocolates any more. The chocolates are made by three different Canadian chocolate manufacturers.

    Bizarre.

Ganong generally makes great chocolates – especially the Chicken Bone seconds double dipped in chocolate – I wonder if they still do that?
