What’s in it for me?

November 18, 2008

This “Health Disparity in Saskatoon: Analysis to Intervention” report is just endlessly interesting.

I haven’t even made it to their recommendations and I keep finding things that I want to talk about.

For instance, 20% of the 350+ page report is composed of “letters of support” from government, academia, and the community.  Seriously.

Most interesting letters of support?  Maybe the Community Association letters that are obviously based on a template provided by someone (Mark Lemstra?).  The King George Community Association didn’t even bother to retype it; they just filled-in-the-blanks.  But, no, the best has to be SEIU West.

“We offer our support for this report based on the assurance that no individuals who are not members of the SEIU bargaining unit will perform work of the bargaining unit, and there will not be, either now or in the future, the loss of, curtailment of, and/or the denial of work that is properly within the ambit of the SEIU bargaining unit.”

And it’s signed by Barbara Cope, President, SEIUWEST.

Isn’t that heartwarming?  They support “working proactively” for “social and economic justice for all” as long as it doesn’t impinge upon their many rights as union members.  Just brilliant.

It occurs to me that, in addition to disseminating research results, this report is an excellent piece of propaganda.  With so many spontaneous letters of support from such a wide cross section of groups and individuals, how could anyone fail to support the conclusions of the report whole heartedly?

I wonder what’s next?
