Merck is studying the effectiveness of the HPV vaccine in men.
I’m shocked!
There’s a big push to immunize young girls to reduce their risk of contracting HPV and therefore reduce their risk of cervical cancer. How do you think women contract HPV? Having sex. Usually with men. So, if you only immunize the women, you’re only dealing with half of the equation.
The vaccine reduces the rate of HPV infection in men by 90%. That’s huge.
The study is ongoing although, given the release of these data, I’m assuming that the vaccine will soon be recommended for all teenagers.
