As you may or may not know, I don’t get out to the movies much. By the time I see a movie, it has been out on video for weeks to months. Yesterday I went out and got a few movies for the kids…to break up the 4 day long weekend, you know? The really super long 4 day weekend…when the kids’ teachers are busy planning lessons and marking tests and all that rot. Yeah. Anyhoo. I walked past the wall of “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” movies and read the back of the DVD cover and thought to myself, “self, you could use a good laugh”. So I rented it, along with Scooby Doo, The Mummy and Home Alone.
I plopped the movie in late last night. And I waited for the laughs…’cause according to Richard Roeper, this was supposed to be one of the “funniest %@!# movies” he had ever seen!!
I can honestly say that I didn’t laugh once, through the entire movie. I didn’t even smile. In fact, I was rolling my eyes, wondering when it was going to end around the point of the movie when Sarah broke up with her “new” lover, Aldous. Perhaps it was partly my own fault because I picked the extended version…but still. The movie was not funny, very predictable and really quite boring. I should have turned it off – I want those 2 hours of my life back please. Russell Brand was quite good – wry, icky and yet charming. Paul Rudd and Bill Hader were pretty good. Naked Jason Segal was a horror and why why why do people think Jonah Hill is a good actor??!! Ugh. On the positive side, Mila Kunis was very pretty and I really want her shark tooth necklace. Oh, and I think a whole movie could have been based on Jack McBrayer’s (Darald) relationship with his new bride - that could have been funny! The dracula puppet opera….wtf!!!
So people don’t think I am just a prude, let it be known that I did think that many parts of the “40-Year-Old Virgin” were funny…not fall down on the floor funny, but funny nonetheless.
Will be watching The Mummy tonight – I’m going to wash that Jason Segal out of my hair with a fresh rinse of Brendan Fraser. Mmmm….mummies.
UPDATE: Asked hubby to watch the movie just in case this was a “guy movie”. You know. One that only guys would think was funnny. He started complaining at about the point when the characters got to Hawaii. That’s, like, at the beginning of the freakin’ movie. He said the funniest part of the whole movie was when Aldous spotted the old guy wearing his shirt. That wasn’t really very funny. Hubbie gave the movie a 5/10. So. The mystery still stands. Why the hell is this movie so popular??
