Say It Ain’t So

September 27, 2008

My daughter came home with a class newsletter.  It explains the study/lesson plan for the coming week.  Under “Science” it said:

Earth Studies – including a number of Creation stories

ORLY?

What the hell?  Where am I?  West Virginia?  When did Creationism get on the public school curriculum in Saskatoon?

I cannot WAIT for Monday.  Because really, if they think that Creationism somehow merits classroom discussion time, the teachers had better brush up on Raelism too.

As long as it is “stories” than what harm could it be. It is problematic to have it in science, history or literature would be a much better course of action for a school to take.

That’s exactly the problem. Creation myths should not be taught as part of science and should certainly not be taught as equivalent to evolution.

this teacher is presenting creation together with evolution…as if they are somehow equal. You cannot do that. Creationism is religion.

agreed unless there would ever be some kind of evidence but you should only present evidence that exists not conjectures or things based on faith. I believe in creation but not a literal 6 days what are they going to teach children like that, are they going to teach them my belief or someone elses. It is a complicated issue that should stay out of science, evolution is not completely understood by Christians or even the secular world maybe we should just teach what we have evidence for that would be a good idea.

Evolution is fully supported by science.

not the darwinian kind, there are issues science is changing and there will be more answers and more questions that is part of the search for truth. God is behind it all, i believe that by faith.

    Isn’t that nice for you.

Just don’t try to teach my children that your faith-based beliefs are facts.

Keep your faith out of science class.

I never said to, science is science but it isn’t set in stone and we need to stop acting like it is.

Actually, Darwinian evolution is very well supported by science.

so darwinian evolution is thought to have taken place the exact way that darwin thought it did?

How is Darwinian evolution not supported by science? Care to elaborate?

Evolution occurs via natural selection and genetic drift. Are the details completely known and unchanging? Of course not. Science is not static and new evidence is incorporated as it is discovered but the basics of evolution, the broad strokes, remain the same.

    Darwinian evolution has evolved.

If it’s a science class, why tell “stories”?

Leave the stories for literature and religion (ah, but I repeat myself) class. It’s where they belong.

Surfing around your blog a bit–interesting variety of topics! I agree with this post–creation stories shouldn’t be in science class. I find it interesting and sad that so many people oppose evolution on religious grounds. I believe that given the scientific evidence for it, they are setting people up to abandon their faith. Equate evolution with atheism, and the chips will not fall where fundamentalist believers hope they will.
