What is the price to pay for desertion? 15 months

August 22, 2008

Robin Long abandoned his responsibilities as a soldier and ran away to Canada. His refugee claim was denied by Canada and now he has had to face the consequences of his choices. He pled guilty to “desertion with intent to remain away permanently” and was sentenced to 15 months in prison.

The sentence hardly seems like enough. I wonder how much longer he had to serve of his enlistment. Some how I don’t think he’ll have a warm and fuzzy welcome from the other soldiers at the military prison. I do hope that he is ultimately dishonorably discharged from the army. If desertion doesn’t warrant a dishonorable discharge, I can’t imagine what does. His behavior and choices were certainly without honor.

I strongly disagree. Robin Long exercised great honor and integrity in following his conscience.

Unfortunately, the US Army doesn’t respect the freedom of conscience. Robin Long may have been legally wrong but he is morally right, and at the end of the day he’ll be able to sleep soundly without guilt.

He can sleep soundly in prison.

The United States Army is a voluntary army. He chose to join the Army, part of the armed forces. What did he think they were armed for? He took the benefits and then, when he was expected to fulfill his duty, he ran away.

I am so glad that Canada refused him refugee status. He was not a refugee.

If you use derogatory terms for the POTUS and VPOTUS, you get deleted.

    Try again.

He joined because he came from a lower class family and couldnt get medical benefits, but by going deserter and in return recieving a dishonarable discharge he will end up even worse than he started out!

Also if I’m not mistaken during a time of was deserters could be put to death!! Look it up!

Hey SGTUSMC, no deserter has been executed for desertion since WWII. The last time was a national shame. It will never happen again.

And Robin Long is free! He is happy! He is proud of what he did.

    Think about that sucka.
