Obama’s Party History: Why is this not in the newspaper?
In 1996, Barack Obama ran for the Illinois State Senate. During that campaign, he sought the endorsement of the New Party. The New Party was an incarnation of the Democratic Socialists of America which sought to take advantage of a wacky loophole in some states’ election laws.
The New Party’s modus operandi included the political strategy of “electoral fusion,” where it would nominate, for various political offices, candidates from other parties (usually Democrats), thereby enabling each of those candidates to occupy more than one ballot line in the voting booth. By so doing, the New Party often was able to influence candidates’ platforms. (Fusion of this type is permitted in seven states — Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Mississippi, New York, South Carolina, and Vermont — but is common only in New York.)
I’ve never heard of electoral fusion before (probably because I’m from Iowa) but it would meant that a candidate would be on the ballot twice. Anyone voting a “straight ticket” for either of the two parties would be voting for that candidate. It’s better than a normal endorsement because it would be an endorsement within the voting booth.
Illinois didn’t have electoral fusion but Obama did have the endorsement of the New Party and he won the primary as noted in their newsletter.
And then “Barack Obama, victor in the 13th State Senate District, encouraged NPers to join in his task forces on Voter Education and Voter Registration.”
That’s right … he invited the New Party members to join his task force.
I think it’s fair to ask what the DSA believes. According to their “Where We Stand” statement, “
…untrammeled capitalism means unrelenting poverty, disease, and unemployment.

Together, economic democracy, global justice, and social redistribution are the linchpins of abroad-based anti-corporate left, that is international in character and local in its reliance on popular control of economic resources and decision-making.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want a President who believes all of that. Has anyone asked Obama about the New Party? Seems like the answer is “no.”

What’s more annoying than cut and paste? Off-topic cut and paste.
OBAMA has always been at an optimal comfort level in the prescints of the far left based on his associations during his educational and politically formative years. Obviously, as he has moved up the electoral food chain, he has found it necessary to de emphasize and camouflage those associations. If elected, I believe OBAMA would become the most radical president in US history, possibly well left of even JIMMY CARTER. I would fully expect our economy and foreign policy prestige to degrade to possibly worse than 1979 levels under CARTER.
