Saskatchewan Union of Nurses confused about employer/employee definitions.
*bumped* See update below.
from dictionary.com (because it’s early and I don’t know where our dictionary is hidden):
Main Entry: em·ploy·er
Function: noun
: one that hires others to perform a service or engage in an activity in exchange for compensationMerriam-Webster’s Dictionary of Law, © 1996 Merriam-Webster, Inc.
As the one hiring others in exchange for compensation, employers typically decided how many employees they need and how those employees should be distributed through the workplace.
This is an interesting point that the Saskatchewan Order of Nurses (SUN) seems to have completely missed. They’ve rejected the latest (as of 5/27 a.m.) offer from the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations (SAHO) which included wages increases up to 35%!
And they rejected it, in part, because “SAHO’s proposal would permit regional health authorities to abolish vacancies and to replace RNs and RPNs with other providers.”
What a crazy idea! Do they mean that the hospitals (the employers) would decide how many nurses are needed and in what positions? The unmitigated audacity!
Seriously. The nurses are the employees. They don’t get to decide that. The employers do. It’s really rather simple. I’m taking a wild guess that SUN is just going to look greedy after this.
Let’s take a straw poll. Everyone raise your hand if you’d like a 35% wage increase. Me!!! Pick me!!!
Update: Seems like I’m not the only one who thinks that the nurses should take the offer.
