Saving Songbirds

May 19, 2008

My fat orange tabby cannot jump over the fence and usually just lounges on the patio.  I didn’t think she could catch a bird if she tried…but I was wrong – she did catch a bird last summer.  My Bengal is a natural born predator and could probably kill a dozen birds in a day if I let her outside without a leash.  Cats can and do make an impact on wild songbird populations.  Young fledglings are especially vulnerable.  That is why I think that the Cat Bib sounds like an amazing idea…although it might embarrass your cat.  I would guess that the bib interferes with the cat’s prey capture pounce.  The flapping of the bib may also add a visual clue to warn birds as the cat makes its final leap.  I think that it would be interesting to see a bigger trial – what do you think Michele.  Nonetheless, I think I might try one on our orange kitty this year and see how it works.  The Bengal will stay inside.
