Not such a bright idea?

April 28, 2008

I thought that the lighting industry would be in favor of a ban on incandescent light bulbs in Canada with all of the subsequent extra profit. I was wrong.

According to documents from a government summit last year,

In one document, government consultants said they assume price and supply will not be affected, but a government notation in the margin says “manufacturers are telling us that with the global push to go to CFLs (compact fluorescent lights), there would be a shortage of material and final products so prices may go up. Hard to say to what extent though.”

So, we might be unable to get any lightbulbs — the good ones because they are banned and the yucky ones because of a shortage. Excellent. Partylight anyone?

    It’s a win-win-lose scam.
The politicians get to claim that they are saving the earth, the light bulb manufacturers get to make money, and consumers lose the ability to chose their own light bulbs.

And it’s a conservative government doing this. Can you imagine if the NDP were in power? They are like the far left wing of the Democrats.
